I gave this book three out of five stars. My feeling is that it is a great story depicting a relationship between two people of two different cultures and all of the other characters that were involved in their lives. This was mainly the story of Whitney and Joel and how their relationship came to be. I enjoyed that the story was told from both of their viewpoints. That was a very interesting way to see how each of them felt from their standpoint since everyone sees life through a different lens.

You learn how Joel came to be the way he was based on his upbringing, culture and the people in his life. Your heart sometimes breaks for all he had to go through, from his relationship with his parents, to what he dealt with in school, even natural disasters. He is from the Caribbean and that shapes him in a way that is different from what Whitney knows being from the States. She comes from a completely different way of life and is trying to understand the way of the island. These two cultures come together and it is truly a tale of relationships, human bonds, hope, fear, the fragility of life and circumstances.

I gave it three out of five stars because I did feel it lacked a little extra substance. I thought there could be a little more "meat" to the narrative. I felt that the story line kept hinting at some sort of climax to the tale, yet it was very flat when you got to the crux of the matter. I thought the ending was lovely though and a nice finish to the book. It really brought it full circle. All in all, it was a nice read. A little slow going at times, but an easy read nonetheless.
