Can I be Frank by Rob Wyatt 3 out of 4 stars

I loved this book, but when I first started it I didn’t really feel that way. The first few pages were very wordy to me. It took me longer to read the first 3 chapters than it did the rest of the story. I’m glad I stuck with it, I fell right into the plot.

I felt the character really started to develop more around the fifth chapter. He became more relatable. Some of my favorite things started to happen, I really started to relate to Frank. When he was having his terrible day, nothing could go right and all the wrong people there to witness it. I laughed out loud. I could feel his discomfort through the authors magical translations. Had me scratching myself after the fire ant dance. I think I may have lived a similar day myself.

This book touched my soul in the authors fearlessness to reference music that one wouldn’t expect with this type of story. Really loved the story more for those little touches. Probably won’t hear those songs again without thinking about Francis.

I was surprised with the directions he had Frank going. Between going to the pub, to thinking of doing mass in a poncho, I was consistently surprised.

I think this book could relate to just about anyone who has ever felt like an underdog or is passionate but awkward. Even though the story has a strong religious presence it’s a unique perspective and fun story that is easily relatable with fun little personality quirks that are just timeless. I’m not a really religious person and I didn’t feel like the Christianity part of the story overwhelmed the characters story.

I wish some of the stories in the story were more in depth, or had more to them. I’m curious to know more about monks and motorbikes from Franks eyes. I wasn’t as heartbroken to be left out of the seminary tragedy, I think that would have spoiled Frank some and was smart to breeze over.

The part I didn’t like was the wordiness of the first part of the book. Once the story was going, it was smooth sailing and I devoured this story. The characters are very relatable. I wasn’t very happy with Bill. But that’s good writing in my opinion, we’re not expecting to love everyone. I would say though, Bill was definitely my upset guy in this twister.

I would say this story has a Patrick Swayze Roadhouse kind of feel. Sorry guys, can’t give away all the juicy tidbits. You’ve got to read for yourself to find out more.
