Review of The Reel Sisters
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a warm and touching story about the strong friendship between five women, Rose, Sophie, Veronica, Amanda, and Melody, who come from different backgrounds but are brought together by their love for fly fishing. Set in the outdoors, the book shows how these women build a deep, honest bond where they can be themselves without fear of judgment. Through both fun and meaningful moments, Cummings highlights how true, lasting friendships can grow in unexpected ways. In a time when close friendships can be difficult to keep, this book reminds us of the special value of these deep connections.
Sophie, a skilled fisher and farm owner; Rose, a veteran with perfect technique for fly fishing; Veronica, a businesswoman who discovers her passion for fly fishing after joining the group; and Amanda, a warm homemaker married to a military man, each bring unique strengths to the group. Their bond deepens after they save Melody, a lively photographer, from being swept downstream, leading her to join their circle. The women regularly meet at a private cabin, finding solace and support in each other despite their busy lives. The novel highlights the significance of women's friendships, the personal growth that comes from connecting with nature, and the adventures that strengthen their unbreakable bond.
I appreciated how The Reel Sisters portrayed deep friendships and the support they bring, symbolised by Rose’s thoughtful quilts. The book showed how fly fishing helped the characters build strong bonds and open up about their deepest feelings. I also loved the empowering message, encouraging women to try new things and not let gender limit their potential. The blend of meaningful relationships, life lessons, and inspiration made this a truly enjoyable read.
The downside of this book was its slow start. With five different perspectives, it took a while to introduce each character and explain their backgrounds. The beginning also had a lot of details about fly fishing and the equipment, which, although interesting, slowed down the plot. This made it harder to get into the story at first, even though these details eventually added to the overall narrative.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Despite a strong plot and good character development, it had some errors and a slow start. However, its unique take on friendship makes it worth reading. I recommend it to those who enjoy heartwarming stories about personal growth and deep connections.
