The Miracle Ladies by Jean-Michel Désiré is a great combination of historical drama and modern-day mystery. The plot is first set in 1641 in China to follow a mission that Chen Sing, an imperial soldier, was sent to do by Emperor Zhu Youjian. Fast forward to the present, and characters like Doug Maine and Father Danny Clark get involved with miracles that are about the enigmatic Miracle Ladies. The story goes to another peak at a charitable ball when the true nature of the miracles is revealed, leaving the readers themselves amazed.

The greatest strength of the book is in how it can transport its readers to a beautiful world with an engaging plot and fully developed characters. An easy, fluent transition between historical and contemporary settings brings both the story and plot very vividly alive. Her eye for detail, coupled with vivid description, brings out the characters and settings. It is a fact that the way the author relayed the plot was top-notch and, to me, a rewarding read altogether.

The book is a great achievement in and of itself, and to me, there is not an evident one that would work toward the betterment of it. The pacing is good; the characters, in turn, stand full and rich, and the plot is complex yet easy to understand. The way historical and contemporary are so seamlessly woven adds both dimension and fascination to the tale.

Great tapestry impregnated with the world of this story, one surely cannot help but be drawn into by its vivid scenes replete with detail and wonderful descriptions. All of this is why I do not dislike this book. The book was exceptionally well edited and error-free.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is that kind of tale where the plot, characters, and temporalities work together just right; in a word, it's captivating and genuinely sweeps one away. Enhanced, for one, by fine, well-drawn character portrayals, the plotlines are seamlessly unravelled across time and space, and meticulous attention to detail by the writer results in a very lively plot with vivid descriptions. I would therefore give the top level of recommendations for a fan of historical fiction and contemporary mystery.
