Have you ever wondered where the inhabitants of North America came from? Were people always here or did they migrate from another region of the world? In Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon, some of these theories are addressed in a manner that is both thought provoking and entertaining.

Set in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, Tom is about to embark on a long hike with his two Native American friends, William and Myra. There are threats of a powerful company coming in to do mining on this mountain and Tom wants to check on his grandfather’s grave. He also knows of an ancient artifact that is hidden which may prove the existence of an ancient people group.

On the evening of the group’s departure, his 13-year-old granddaughter, Sarah, arrives out of the blue. Tom has never met Sarah before and it is pretty evident from the beginning that Sarah has a chip on her shoulder. She has had a hard life, is now an orphan, and is suddenly thrust on the doorstep of a stranger. Not knowing what to do and with much reluctance Tom decides to take Sarah along. The hike into the mountains is a long and difficult one. Many things happen, discussions take place, personalities clash, and Sarah experiences things that truly seem impossible. At first, Tom regrets his decision to bring his granddaughter along, but towards the end his eyes are opened and he realizes that Sarah’s experiences were truly amazing.

The genre of Strong Heart was listed as other fiction, but to me I would consider this more of an adventure fiction kind of book. I enjoyed how the author weaved the legends of ancient people into the story. I enjoyed Sarah’s magical tale. It made me feel like I was right there experiencing it all right along with Sarah. There were many elements about this story that I could easily believe in whereas other ideas were a bit of a stretch and not something I would accept.

In the end, I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars for two reasons. The first reason was that it took me awhile to connect with the book. It was slow going for the first third of the book, but after that the action picked up and then became impossible to put down. The second reason for my rating was that the story abruptly ends leaving me with a lot of unanswered questions. I would have liked to have had a little more closure to the story.

All in all, I recommend giving this book a try. It will take you on a magical journey filled with adventure and suspense. It will also make you appreciate all the modern conveniences that exist in our world today.
