Joe Basara pens down a sweet narrative from the first-person point of view in the novel "Sip Lake," making it an accurate buildungsroman. The story is set against the background of Cypress Lake, which is famous as "Sip Lake." The author has written, "Sip Lake is what the locals call it." Owen Cloud is the central character of the novel, and that's why the readers know him and several other characters through his eyes.
Cloud's friend wanted him to join in the work of selling estate, but Owen found an orderly job at the local hospital as he believed "putting butts on bed pans" would suit himself more than anything else. On the first night of his job, he met his colleague Tina Gardenia and fell for her. He was having his lunch and was noticing an incomplete wall painting as there was no one to talk to in the dining room. At that very moment, her "hello" startled him, and a butterfly sat on his heart without giving him a chance to reject it. He believed in love but carried doubt about himself and a lack of confidence about whether any girl would accept him or not due to his "kinky red hair and a pug nose," in spite of having a caring personality and being trustworthy. He broke up with a girl at his college recently, and for that reason, he didn't wish to involve himself in a relationship so early. Moreover, he was an author and wanted to serve the literary world with "a great work of literature." Would his dream come true one day? What was the result of his love life? Readers have to go through the papers in this book to know the answers.
This novel belongs to the genre of romantic comedy. For readers who enjoy reading this genre- and character-centric novel, this book is for you. I love the cover design of this book, and it is the very reason why I picked up this book to read, as I am not familiar with the author before. However, too many characters lead me to utter confusion and boredom for a while, but I enjoy the society of 1977 and the mindset of people. It is a slow-paced book, according to me. Being a fast reader, it is a tough task for me to finish the book. So, I will rate this book three out of five. The readers, who are adults both in age and mind, can read the book. It is not a children's book, as the novel contains sexual scenarios. If you take my opinion, you can give it a one-time read anyway.
