My Author Is Dead by Michel Bruneau is a fictional book that is hard to describe. It’s branded as “other fiction”, and I agree that it doesn’t fit into any particular category. Adam Chad Kilroy has grown up in a dystopian society in which certain factions are very prejudiced against others. The gist of the story is that Adam is accused of a crime, and the reader follows him through his trial. Those who enjoy thought-provoking reads may enjoy this novel with its themes of social morals, prejudice, and societal norms.

I found the title intriguing, and the short summary I read was interesting. I thought the premise of the novel seemed unique and unlike anything I had been currently reading. Upon reading the prologue, I was thoroughly confused but still curious about what was to come. For the first twenty percent or so, I was captivated by the provocative take on plot. It vaguely called to mind Lois Lowry’s The Giver, with its specific jobs for people and fear of what’s outside of the main character’s society. However, poor editing and a lull in action began to bore me. I seriously considered putting down this book and walking away. I toughed it out and finished but was extremely disappointed. I thought the idea for the book was new and refreshing, but it just didn’t live up to its potential.

As mentioned, poor editing was part of the downfall of this novel. There were many, many errors. Although most didn’t interfere with comprehension, there were far too many for me to think this book was professionally edited. There were misplaced pronouns, confusing sentences, spelling errors, and issues with subject-verb agreement. These errors were very distracting and often threw me out of the storyline.

About halfway through the book, the progression of the plot really seemed to slow down. This is the point where I almost gave up on reading it. I wanted to like this book. I wanted to enjoy it. I wanted to see Michel Bruneau’s creative idea come to fruition. Unfortunately, it was not to be. As a reader, I was very frustrated with the stagnant plot and unsatisfying ending.

My Author Is Dead had an interesting take on the author-character dynamic, and I was really looking forward to reading it. Perhaps with some polish and a few changes, it could meet its full potential. I truly felt the middle part of the story needed some rewriting to keep it fresh and interesting to the reader. Due to the dragging of the plot and grammatical errors, I gave this book 2 out of 4 stars. The book held a lot of promise but failed in its execution.
