In Mary Glickman's "By the Rivers of Babylon," set in South Carolina in 1997, the narrative follows Ella Price and various characters entangled in a web of complex relationships and secrets. Ella, stuck in traffic near Fenton Bridge, crosses paths with Roland Fenton and encounters a mysterious woman named Abigail Becker. Abigail's arrival ignites intrigue and romance among the island community, particularly with Billy Euston and Joe Becker. As Abigail's presence causes tension and suspicion, the story delves into themes of love, betrayal, and redemption. The narrative unfolds through connections and reveals shocking truths, ultimately leading to a heart-wrenching conclusion marked by tragedy and introspection.

"By the Rivers of Babylon" is a richly woven tale of Southern life, love, and loss that captivates from beginning to end. The author's prose effortlessly transports readers to the sultry South Carolina setting, where human relationships are explored with depth and sensitivity. The characters are vividly drawn, each grappling with their desires, while the intertwining plotlines keep the narrative engaging and suspenseful. The author navigates themes of race, identity, and redemption, weaving them seamlessly into the content of the story.

One of my favorite characters in this book is Ella Price. Ella's strength, determination, and complexity make her a compelling figure in the story. Ella's journey of self-discovery and her ability to confront the past with courage and determination make her a relatable and inspiring character. Furthermore, Ella's authenticity and unwavering spirit make her a standout character in the novel. The book is exceptionally edited, and there is nothing I dislike about the book.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its compelling characters, each contributing to the richness and depth of the story. Characters like Ella Price exemplify strength and resilience, while Abigail Becker adds mystery and intrigue to the narrative. Billy Euston's charm and complexity draw readers in.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy Southern fiction. Additionally, those interested in stories that explore themes of love, betrayal, and redemption within the context of Southern culture and history will find this book particularly compelling.
