Historical yet modern. Fictional at the same time realistic. This is how I described the book Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. Mr. Sheldon illustrated two stories in one book. It showcased cultural memories, history and legend of the Native American tribes and the Olympian Peninsula. And on the other hand he expounded events in modern times similar to the struggle of locals with mining companies.
Sarah was the granddaughter of Tom Olsen. She was brought by Ruth, Tom's ex-wife. Tom never had an idea that her deceased daughter had a child. It was untimely when Sarah came. They have planned to do camping the next day. William, friend of Tom suggested to bring Sarah along. Sarah was judged as a problem child. While resting after a long walk, Sarah had vanished for a time and reappeared with strange story beyond any of them were familiar with. She got lost in the wilderness and found herself in an unexplained experienced. She caught herself in a historical adventure.
Charlie Sheldon author of this book has a Degree in Wildlife Biology and Resource Management. He is filled with many experiences. A commercial fisherman, a consultant, port planner, port construction manager, executive port director, then an ordinary seaman, hiker in the Olympian Mountains, a cook for his wife and a writer.
While reading the book, my imagination runs wild. Whenever the story comes to my mind, it felt like I saw it on the big screen just like a movie. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars.Though it has a very few typographical error. The story was illustrated beautifully. I felt terrified and worried when Sarah got lost. I felt the tension during the encounter between Tom's group and the rangers. I felt nervous when the wild animals attacked the tribes. Every detail was clear and well-defined.
I was indeed entertained by this book. I highly recommend it to those who are fascinated with traditional stories. It is a book of legends in modern times. It is like science versus history. In modern days, rarely or very few show interest when it comes to historical, mythological stories. Modernization and the peoples' increasing intellectual capacity made it difficult for us to somehow look back to our ancestors and their contribution to our existence. And in some way it made me realized that sometimes we have to listen to the young generations. Because they were young by experience it does not necessarily means they lack judgement and knowledge.
