"By the Rivers of Babylon" by Mary Glickman portrays the beautiful Abigail Becker, married to Joe, who recently moved to Sweetgrass Island. Joe worries about the attention his wife's beauty attracts, especially in their new environment. Although Abigail is familiar with the area from visiting her aunt at Catawba Plantation, it's a new experience for Joe. When they inherit a house from her aunt and move in, Abigail's beauty continues to draw attention, sparking tension in their relationship. At Declan's pub, Abigail captures the interest of Billy Euston, a womanizer, while Joe remains unfazed by the attention she receives from other men. However, signs of Abigail's longing for another man emerge, and Billy becomes a tempting prospect. The romantic tension between Joe and Abigail keeps readers in suspense, wondering if Abigail will stray from her marriage. "By the Rivers of Babylon" is a realistic tale of love that explores the uncertainties and complexities of human relationships.

One captivating aspect of this book is its writing style, which presents the story in an easy-to-follow sentence structure. The thoughtfully chosen names for each character also add to its appeal, with names that match their roles and the story's setting, making them memorable. The moderate romantic descriptions are another highlight, particularly the vivid portrayal of Abigail's beauty through well-chosen words, allowing readers to envision her appearance. Additionally, the suspenseful quality of the book is evident from the beginning, as the author skillfully builds tension, especially in the struggles to identify the murderer and culprit, keeping readers engaged and eager to turn the pages.

I don't have an objective reason to dislike anything about this book. It meets my need for a suspenseful reading experience as well as the ability to follow the plot easily. The book is exceptionally well edited because I didn't find any grammar errors in it. All these considered, I'll rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. If you love to read realistic fiction with moderately romantic scenes, lots of plot twists, and/or suspense, you would like this book.
