Pop’s was a fascinating book from the beginning. I enjoyed the setting and era of the book. The author, M.R. Gerbo, set the beginning of the book up to introduce each character, important event, or piece of information that the reader may need to know, which I thought was cool because each person or thing had its own chapter. I loved that this story took place in Michigan and that the time was set in the 1960’s. It was effortless to read and Gerbo did a great job creating the story, so you didn’t want to put it down. Mickey was easily my favorite character, just because he seemed to get it. And by it, I mean everything. He might have had questions about things like the hard guys and what they were involved in, but he wasn’t afraid to ask them and knew when not to and when to be quiet. I also liked how he was such a well-rounded and dependable character, which resonated with me. He was trustworthy and easy to talk to as exhibited when Pop’s opened up to him about how he came to own the restaurant. When Mickey cleaned up the lake after a party he wasn’t at it made me feel for him. He just wanted to clean up his fishing spot because that was how it should be, which made me like Mickey even more.
There was a lot of profanity, but it didn’t bother me. I also felt as though the ending was a bit rushed for my liking and felt Gerbo could have added more to how Sissy turned out after her overdose by giving more insight into her recovery. I think it also would have been better had Gerbo elaborated on Johnny Sterlacci and Mickey Pervitch’s friendship, especially seeing that Johnny saved Mickey from being killed. There were quite a few typos and errors in this book. Given this and the aforementioned reasons for the ending being rushed and the vagueness of Sissy’s recovery, I rated this book three out of five stars. That does not take away from the greatness of the rest of the book, I just feel that there were a few things the author could have elaborated on to bring this book together a little better and have had it edited better. I really enjoyed this story, but there were just a few things the author could have done to make this book even better.
