Ahoy! The sea is calling. Come aboard for this exciting and unpredictable adventure. In this first novel of a series, author Nina Purtee pens a fun and exhilarating voyage across the globe in Beyond the Sea. Annie is young, beautiful, talented, and successful on the outside, but recent unfortunate events have cast a fog over her inner compass. She needs to move forward, but feelings of guilt and indecision have clouded the path to her future. With the blessing of her family, Annie eagerly accepts the opportunity to set sail on her grandfather’s magnificent boat. With her love of the sea and sailing, the time aboard will surely be a soothing balm for her soul and calm the waves in her head. And this might be her only chance to discover the whereabouts of her missing father. Navigated by intuition, Annie’s journey organically nudges her to various interesting and exotic places, including Africa, Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, Thailand, and many other locations. Along with the fresh sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions of the various cultures, there’s even a hint of intrigue and danger. Along the way, Annie develops stimulating and lasting friendships. She even crosses paths with two gorgeous, charming, and somewhat mysterious men. What are the possibilities, and how will her journey end?

In this hard-to-put-down book, the chapters are refreshingly short. With only five or six pages each, the sections are easily digestible. On more than one occasion, I could be caught binge-reading! I also love that there’s not one single curse word, and the language throughout the book is very pleasing to the palate. Within the modest 276 pages, the author packs a surprising amount of movement and emotion and knows how to engage and entertain with her words. To my delight, every page and every paragraph brought a new, unexpected twist to the story. The diversity of culture within Annie’s family is fascinating. Gatherings were never dull or ordinary with all her Spanish, British, American, and French relatives. Another gold star element of this work is how the author weaves Annie’s personal journal entries into the fabric of the narrative, providing another dimension of enjoyment for the reader. These intimate and introspective thoughts are a mere trickle of the inner questions she encounters, plus the growth and wisdom she gains on her path. The following is a sample from her journal: “It occurs to me that sometimes the best way forward is to not get in your own way.”

In my opinion, there’s absolutely nothing frown-worthy in Beyond the Sea. This is a well-written, fun, and exciting escapade. The author’s own world-traveling experience shines throughout the pages of this captivating tale. I look forward to reading the second volume in this series, and I happily rate Beyond the Sea a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this novel to those who love traveling, history, exploring exotic lands, and learning about diverse cultures. Also, lovers of romance will not be disappointed! So, drop your anchor, get cozy, and dive into the incredible voyage that is Beyond the Sea!
