Nimue: Freeing Merlin by Ayn Cates revolves around a young woman from America returning to her hometown and eventually uncovering her past life by delving into her subconscious and feeling compelled to free "Merlin" to restore balance to the world. This is my first time reading about Celtic mythology, and I honestly did not know what to expect from this book.

I rated the book a 4 out of 5 because it was a captivating read. I particularly love how the author incorporated the spiritual aspects when she mentioned the tarot card and portrayed the juxtaposition of the modern-day Nimue with another version of her in a different lifetime. Instead of sword clashing and heart-pounding thrills, it is about calming waves on the sea of self-awareness. As Nimue embarks on her quest to know herself, you cannot help but join her. She dives deeper into understanding Merlin and the secrets of the three grails. In my opinion, it was a good blend of mythology and personal discovery. The author portrayed the novel in a way that pulls you in with its vivid imagery and surprising twists. I only rated it a 4 because I believe the plots were rushed; switching to another lifetime was quite confusing to me. It could also be because I had not read the first books in the series, but I wish the author had explained more in the beginning before it switched to a different lifetime.

My favorite thing about the book is how well the author used descriptive language to help me imagine spiritual experiences. It is like a mirror and reflects my personal journey, encouraging me to contemplate my own path and free the "Merlin." Although I had to use the glossary at the end of the book and research some of the content online, I think the author did a great job making the story engaging. Moreover, the meticulous attention to detail is evident not only in the storytelling but also in the illustrations and the overall editing of the book. The graphic designs seamlessly complement the narrative, while the writing itself remains pristine, free from errors and typos. Overall, this book is a must-read for fantasy literature enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about Celtic mythology and exploring its intricacies.
