Review of Nimue: Freeing Merlin (Barnes & Noble Edition)
I enjoyed this book a little more than I originally thought I would. It was a slow burn in the first part and a little cliche. It was not initially clear how the Arthurian Legend was going to be integrated in a new and interesting way, which made continuing to read arduous. The second part was more compelling, but also more confusing. It encompasses many years and various aspects of the lore. The main character in this section of the book is referred to by several titles and names that are used interchangeably, creating a bit of muddled storytelling, but not muddled so much that I was unable to continue the read. The second part of the book is so different than the first part that I found myself compelled to continue reading to see how the author was going to tie the two sections together. The final part of the book assuredly brought the story full circle and tied up the loose ends of the plot. It was an unexpected outcome that pulled the modern world character “Nina” and the Arthurian world version of the same character “Nimue” together. If you are a fan of Arthurian Legend retellings, this book is worth the read. I also enjoyed the added Arthurian history and facts that are included following the completion of the story. The visualization section allowed me, as the reader, to immerse myself in the Arthurian realm and truly feel as though I was a part of the story. Overall, despite being a retelling of a well-known story, Nimue: Freeing Merlin was a worthwhile read. It was a refreshing story based on the meshing together of the modern world and an ancient legend. It weaves together many of the diverse characters from Arthurian legend, creating a world in which they are integrated and interconnected with the modern world and modern characters the reader can relate to. I rated the book a 3 out of 4 and a 3 out of 5 star book because it is a good read and I enjoyed it but it is more of a niche sector topic. A 4 out of 5 book would be one that I would remembe r years after reading and may even feel compelled to re-read. I feel a 4 out of 4 book or a 5 out of 5 book has to be so moving that it will change any reader's thought or perspective, but I feel the niche topic of this book would stop some readers from thoroughly enjoying the book and being able to follow along with the story to completely understand the message that is conveyed through the writing.
