The further I got into this book, the more I enjoyed the storyline of Nimue: Freeing Merlin by Ayn Cates Sullivan. I appreciated the exploration into the world of self-awareness and consciousness with Nina/Nimue. She brought us along her centuries-long journey of finding out who she was in previous lives and who she was ultimately meant to be—the other-dimensional soul or being that would help to balance out lightness with the darkness that the human race on earth can’t help but to devolve into. While her romantic relationship with Merlin was complex, it was devoted and passionate. I think Sullivan was proficient in revealing the many layers and seasons of their bond.

I valued the last several chapters of the book where Sullivan gave an overview of how the reader can translate the spiritual lessons that Nimue learned into their own lives and consciousness. She discusses the main characters and their origins while explaining their meaning. While she doesn’t explain everything in full detail, she provides enough details for the reader to research and begin their own spiritual journey.

I was not familiar with the legend of Merlin and Nimue, so this book was difficult for me to grasp for the first several chapters. As the plot was developed, it was hard to follow with Nimue jumping back and forth into different dimensions. It was also confusing to know who Nimue was referring to because many of the characters were called different names at different points of the book. I started to become comfortable with the flow and storyline about halfway through.

Once I began to understand what was going on in the story, I thoroughly enjoyed finishing the book and would recommend it especially to readers familiar with this genre or legend. Since I listened to this book on audio I cannot attest to the quality of editing in regards to typos, however I did not notice any grammatical errors in the audiobook. Because of the difficulty to follow along, I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars.
