Calvin Lloyd, better known as Cal, leads an isolated life and has scarcely any friends. The relationships that he manages to form are taboo, so he conceals them to avoid being further secluded than he already is. However, his confidante and true companion is his imaginary friend, Bellamy. Throughout the book, we see that Bellamy challenges Cal to defy societal norms and stand up to his many oppressors. Cal is the narrator of the story, and he takes us through his upbringing as well as the many predicaments that he faces, such as the abusive relationship with his stepmother, the prohibited relationship with his black girlfriend, the platonic friendship with his gay neighbor, and the murder of his childhood friend.

I developed an interest in a few topics while I read Bellamy by G. Bradley Davis. To start, I appreciated that the story was told by the main character because it gave the narrative a much more intimate and sincere feel. Every chapter started with a quote or some food for thought that related to the chapter's theme, and I enjoyed that about the book because it was thought-provoking. Last but not least, I adored the plot twist at the end.

One aspect of this book that I didn't enjoy was that it was a little more obscene and erotic than I had imagined.

This novel was fantastic, and I would read it again. I simply wish that it had undergone rigorous editing because I found a ton of errors. I had great expectations that the novel would conclude happily, but I like the narrative twist, and I adore books with unexpected endings. Additionally, I liked that it contained some comic parts. It was a wonderful read all around, in my opinion. I therefore give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I would suggest this fictitious book to anyone who is interested in drama, romance, crime, or historical fiction because it combines all of those things. This book also addresses a number of social prejudices, including racism, discrimination, and sexual assault and abuse; therefore, I wouldn't suggest it to anyone who is sensitive to those issues.
