Sip Lake is a male’s perspective on romance in a small Florida town, Cypress Lake. In this first-person narrative Owen (Red) Cloud takes you through a summer as a young man trying to find himself as he finds love. Set in the late 70’s Red spends a summer at Sip Lake, working in a hospital and figuring out his life. Red ends up in Sip Lake due to a best friend, Harry that lives in the area. Red’s quirky personality and real-life views of him of himself makes him a likable main character. As you read through the book Red goes off in daydreams, or thoughts.
I gave this book a 3 out of 5. Where it was a fun, easy story it lacked a hook. In places, the book was hard to follow, it was a slow read that did not have me rushing back to see what happens next. The character names where fun, but the character development was too much and could be confusing. There were too many characters that only had a name and a paragraph in the story. This made too many story lines to hard to follow. Red was a fun character, but his supporting characters lacked depth and where all very predictable. As you read through the book Red goes off in daydreams, or thoughts that could be hard to follow.
Joseph Basara wrote in too much detail, overexplaining to many of the points in the story. There were a few grammatical errors and a few thoughts that where not finished. The story on its own was fine, it could have been told in 100 less pages. It was predictable and once the love interest was figured out it was hard to come back to the story, there was no hook to suck you in.
This book contained no violence, mild language and it was not sexual (minus a little kissing.)
