Binge by Anne Pfeffer is a realistic, compassionate story of a young woman struggling with being 40 pounds overweight in a world that is quick to judge people, especially women, by their body size. Sabrina Hunter is an aspiring novelist who pays her bills by being an assistant to a thankless talent agent with C-list stars. When her novel is accepted for publication with a press junket for the book launch, Sabrina is forced to face her body issues. Her new publisher wants to discuss pictures and outfits for the book launch. Sabrina wants to overeat because of the stress. She is led to a support group for mindful eating in her weight-loss journey, where she meets people with similar struggles, including Daniel, to whom she is wildly attracted. Will her body issues preclude her from love or can she learn to love herself?

This book is realistic and soul-baring. As a person who is overweight, I wondered if the thoughts and feelings portrayed would be truthful or overblown. They are painfully and compassionately truthful. I found myself nodding my head at Sabrina’s struggles, even as I wanted to throw my arms around her and love her. This book allows overweight people to know they are not alone and gives average-sized people a glimpse into an overweight person’s daily struggles. It has such a positive message and ultimate outlook.

The only possible negative would be the triggers this book topic may cause for people who struggle with eating disorders. The depictions are so realistic as to trigger some trauma responses. However, readers who finish the book will find a satisfying resolution and perhaps some validation.

I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. Truthfully, the only issues were a few mild editing errors where words were divided by syllable incorrectly. Otherwise, this is a well-written story filled with compassion and wisdom.

I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with body image. It’s compassionate and kind. It will also satisfy readers who enjoy a realistic and special romance.
