The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson is about two men who have the same experience when it comes to alcohol addiction. It started with Duke, a circus performer who drinks alcoholic beverages to give him the courage to perform a dangerous act. On the other hand, there is Gary, a boy who doesn’t want any involvement with his mother, who has the same circumstances as him, and that leads him to enjoy his life, where alcohol is also included. These two men will find a connection that only the two of them will understand.

What I like about the book is that the friends around Duke know about his addiction, but it doesn’t hinder them from being his friends. They are always there whenever he needs them and guide him with the things that can help him overcome the challenges that he faces. Also, I loved how Duke guided Gary, even though it was hard for him to do so.

What I don’t like about the book is the people around Gary, especially in her college days. He is really a very smart kid, but his friends led him to his alcohol addiction. Yes, he might enjoy his students’ days, but it also crushes the opportunity ahead of him.

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is exceptionally edited and I didn’t notice a mistake. I commend the author’s writing; it is very emotional and impactful and opens the eyes of the reader regarding the importance of lending a hand to the people who suffer and don’t know how to deal with it.

I will recommend this book to young adults; they could learn the importance of knowing how to enjoy life at their age without destroying the future ahead of them. They can also gain knowledge on picking people who can influence them to a greater life rather than individuals who are only there in happy times.
