Gary Robinson's three-part section in The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid chronicles the lives of two protagonists who were brought up in dysfunctional alcoholic households. Duke is introduced in the opening section. Young and already doing drugs, he ran away from home and joined a circus. When he joined the circus, which became his stable family, he found a new job and a new way of life. He excels mostly at the sword-swallowing maneuver, with which he constantly cheats death, as well as other acts like eating fire. The second section begins by introducing Gary, a graduate who is unemployed and struggling with alcoholism. The third and last section of the book is when the paths of the two main characters converge in the town of Chico. As they strive to navigate life and make significant adjustments, they end up being incredibly good friends and family.

The information I read in this book is all I actually need to understand what "friends that become family" means. The chance meeting between Duke and Gary grows in power. Together, they can change their lives by holding each other's hands. Really inspiring, I must say. It illustrated how each person we come into contact with can help us achieve our goals. As Angel saved Gary's life, I could not stop reading through the pages faster. It was impossible to resist the circus family. I adored that they were a large, loving family and that they looked out for one another, which compelled the tie to become quite solid.

I had no issues with this book. I think the author did a great job at developing the plot twist, which kept me riveted. The way the author brought the characters together and created a strong bond between them was very lovely. I cherished how the author provided a completely fresh viewpoint and understanding of friendship.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Because I believe the book deserves this rating, I was unable to give it a lower one. While reading, I did not see any typos or grammatical flaws, which led me to conclude that the book had been exceptionally well edited. I had a strong connection to the characters.

This book is recommended for anyone interested in fast-paced adventures set in the circus world. Readers will benefit from the idea of friendship through thick and thin standing out so strongly.
