Sometimes, the thing that brings people together is a common interest. Sophie, Rose, Amanda, and Veronica shared a passion for fly-fishing. Aside from being women in the same age group, their interest in the activity of catching fish for fun was what glued their sisterhood together. The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings follows these women as they take a weekend away in the woods to fly-fish and bond. This trip was part of their lives. It was something they did frequently. This time, however, they were in for quite a surprise.

As a man, I must say I wasn't that thrilled to read a book about female friendships. I was, however, intrigued to read about the fly-fishing component of the story. I wanted to see how the author would incorporate the sport into the lives of these women, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did the fly-fishing not feel out of place, it almost made perfect sense. The idea of middle-aged women participating in such a sport may seem strange, but it worked. I believed that these women loved the activity. I believed that some of them were exceptional at the sport.

The women are ordinary by all means. They deal with the same issues that women in their age group deal with. They have insecurities. They have desires that typical women have. I think that the idea to make these women real worked well. There was a balance between the fly-fishing component of the story and their regular lives, and that made the story believable.

I am not a fan of the humourous feel of the story. The idea of humour is not the problem. The humour just wasn't my cup of tea. I barely laughed throughout the book. I like humour that is a little more sophisticated than the one I found in this novel. I feel that the quality of the humour forces me to rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. Everything else was fine, and I loved the story.

I recommend the book to people who love drama and fly-fishing. I think that this book was written to honour female friendships and fly-fishing equally.
