Ragamuffin hit some of my favorite topics: small town, coming-of-age, mid 1900’s. I was pulled into the story right away because it seemed to hit the ground running.
Eventually, the reader gets pulled into some side-stories involving neighborhood characters the protagonist meets along the way. These parts of the story were interesting and demonstrated plenty of knowledge on certain subjects. For me, these side-stories diluted the story of the main character. I wanted to know more about the protagonist’s emotions and day-to-day personal development. It seemed that she was a confident little adult from the start and stayed that way throughout the story. There were certain scenes in the story which would’ve been dragged out for months in reality but only took a few days or weeks in the novel. I understand this was necessary to bring the scene to completion in a timely manner but, for me, it added to the feeling of the author trying to fit too much into one novel. These are the reasons I gave Ragamuffin an 3/5 rating.
Overall, I did enjoy reading Ragamuffin. I looked forward to reading all of the resolutions to all of the situations and I enjoyed learning about the characters as they were presented.
