In the book Random Pattern by author Ken Mackennick, Johnson worked for years with the Newton Program, a human reproduction program. He will retire from work tomorrow. That night, he could not sleep and suffered from random dreams here and there. His dreams reflected his loneliness and how much he hated his wife and his reality. His dreams explained all the details of his life and everything he went through during his work with the Nazi Newton Program. His high intelligence did not qualify him to obtain the life he desired. He expressed his feelings that he was being followed and monitored in every detail as if he were an important target within the plan of the Newton program. The story takes us through many stations in the life of Johnson in the form of a dream.

I liked the general idea of the novel despite the many repulsive details. Paying attention to science to ensure that the outcome of sexual interactions may lead to the development of the human species, but it also may give the opposite results, as it may create spiritually empty beings. This is exactly what happened with Johnson, as he was suffering from loneliness and spiritual emptiness to the point that he tried to create scenes of his death in which people would interact in different ways. I also liked the happy ending of the story when Jonson finally approached his real love.

Among the things that I did not like about this novel were the bold sexual scenes. These scenes did not add anything to the novel but expressed the amount of lust in the main character. Many of his dreams were provocative and depicted children in an immoral way. Also, I did not like his way of thinking, his dialogue with the Creator, and how he objected to cosmic laws and tried to make them serve his lust and goals. His thoughts showed the extent of his turmoil. Sometimes, while reading the novel, I felt bored due to the large number of details. At other times, I was disgusted by Johnson's dreams, which spun out of control and talked about inappropriate details. I was not able to understand the main character, Was it because of his upbringing when he was young? Or because of the nature of his work? Or because of his marriage and his sense of loneliness? Or was this a mixture of the previous reasons?

The novel's language was easy to convey, which made the story easy to understand. The novel was well edited. I rate this novel 3 out of 5 stars, as I wish the writer had avoided the previous negative points.

I recommend that people interested in science, for example, about scientific programs related to human development, read this novel, as it may benefit them to know the outcome of such research on humans in the future.
