The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson are about the experiences of Duke and Gary. Duke is an entertainer; he swallows sword in a circus to be able to survive in life. While, Gary is a college boy who doesn’t have any plans and love to make a ruckus everywhere. One day, they will meet each other in the city. Gary will admire Duke’s mindset and that is where their friendship will begin. They will share their experiences in alcohol addiction and how it affects how they live; both of them will change each other’s lives.

What I like about the book is when Duke uses the admiration of Gary as a weapon to help him understand that he can’t go anywhere if he doesn’t stop drinking. He even invited Gary to come along with him in a circus showcase to be able to help him sober up. Also, I liked how Duke and Gary have the different perspectives in life but they were able to compromise from it and they even gather information from one another. Moreover, I loved how Duke appreciates his circus family to the point where he even tattooed them in his body to became a reminder. Lastly, I liked that Gary was able to find a reason to stop his addiction and start a new life where alcohol doesn’t exist anymore.

There is nothing that I don’t like about the book, this story helps me a lot to became understandable with people’s problem that I should never judge them because I don’t know what they are going through. I realize that, I, myself should always offer a hand for them to hold.

I will rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because it is exceptionally edited and I didn’t notice a mistake. I loved how the author was able to convey his experiences out loud. He never feels ashamed on what happen to him, instead he makes it a tool to become the writer he is now. Also, the story is very straight forward even though it consists of two main characters, it is very smooth and easy to understand.

I will recommend this book to the young adults, because they would probably learn from this novel. The experiences of the characters can help them to understand how hard to raise again after falling a million times. This book could inspire them to stay away from things that could scatter your life and others.
