Alexa Winston is an African-American divorced mother of three sons who works for a law firm in the Washington DC area. University Professor Mateo De Rocha has no time for affairs of the heart, preferring meaningless flings; that is until he meets her. Alexa is cautious about putting her heart on the line, having rebuilt her life after a divorce. Mateo sets out to convince her of the truth of his feelings. The two are partnered up for a duathlon which leads to an agreement that will help them learn about one another. The firm Alexa works at doesn’t hire the most reputable clients and she finds herself facing down someone from her past. Mateo is an immigrant who comes from a shady family and has an ex (or two) he would rather like to forget about. Told from the perspectives of Alexa, Mateo, and the personification of Truth, Masked Intent: A Modern-Day Morality Play by Kimberly Greer gives us a story about finding the courage to believe in love again and hold your own in the world.

I appreciate that Alexa and Mateo are individuals who have complex lives, histories, and emotions. They both have family secrets they carry around and jobs they do not feel they are quite fit for. Alexa is a woman who wants nothing more than to hold her family together and has to learn that she also deserves to have someone who will take care of her. That she also deserves a safe place to land when the chaos of the world gets to be too much. Mateo’s heart has been closed for a decade, but Alexa causes it to open up again. These two have a sexual chemistry that leaps off the pages of Masked Intent.

While there were points of the story that grasped me better than others, I struggle to think of anything from the book I view in a negative light. Greer’s story brings the characters to life emotionally and vividly. I rooted for Mateo and Alexa to find happiness.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Alexa is an admirable character who has been through so much and deserves someone as steadfast as Mateo. Greer delivers a passionate romance involving two people who prove to be absolutely fit for each other.

My recommendation for this book would be for those looking for a story involving romance, passion, secrets, and learning to own up to what’s in your heart.
