Review of The Unlikely Cowboy
James E. Doucette wrote the novel The Unlikely Cowboy. Sergeant Joseph D'Angelo was a patrol officer from Brooklyn's 81st Precinct. He had been a cop for 20 years and was well-liked by the other officers on the squad. However, the last few years have not been kind to him. He had lost his parents, wife, and son. His wife died of cancer, and his son was killed in combat. Joe held on to his job and went about his daily routine until an incident changed everything. Three teenagers were robbing a bank. Joe and the other patrol units were called in to intervene. One teen died and another was injured in the process.
However, the situation was exaggerated. The press called it an overreaction by the police, and the public demanded justice. Sergeant Joe was suspended indefinitely. To make matters more complicated, one of the teenagers was the son of Joe's friend. During this time, he received a phone call from an old friend, Kyle. Kyle noticed Joe was going through a lot and suggested a change of scenery. So Joe relocated to Canyon, Texas, and established a gun repair shop. Is this going to be a new beginning for Joe? How well is he going to adapt to being a cowboy? Will there be no repercussions from his past? To find out, read this book.
The first thing I like about this book is how simple the plot is. It was not at all difficult to read. There was some backstory on the new characters we were introduced to. It was easier to understand where they came from and how they fit into the story. The conversations were so interesting that I got a sense of the types of relationships the people had. Another thing that made this book enjoyable to read were the short chapters. Each chapter had a title that gave an idea of what it was about. As a reader, I find it difficult to read a book for long periods, but that was not the case when I read this book. Rowdy is my favorite character. I like how his disability did not limit him. He also played an important role in the plot.
This book had nothing to dislike about it. It was enjoyable to read and not difficult to comprehend. The characters could easily be distinguished. Although there was violence, there were no details that would have made it too graphic for some readers. There were no errors that I noticed, indicating that it was flawlessly edited.
This book gets five out of five stars from me. It was entertaining to read and featured distinct characters. The plot, narrative, characters, and interactions all contributed to this book being exceptional, in my opinion.
I recommend this book to fans of good storylines in fiction novels. Those who enjoy crime and investigative thrillers will enjoy this book.
