Kalayla, Maureen, and Lena are three central characters in Kalayla, a novel written by Jeannie Nicholas. Lena is an elderly woman with a sad past. She lives alone and wears black attire. Her sadness is because of the children she was unable to raise to be good men. Her deceased husband used to abuse her physically, psychologically, and sexually. Also, he used to interfere with her effort to raise her boys to be good men. Maureen is a young Irish woman who marries a black man. This fact makes her family disown her. Hence, she has to work to provide for herself and her daughter, Kalayala. Hence, she has little or no time for Kalayla. Kalayla is an interesting young girl who is always alone. Lena notices her. Kalayla reminds Lena of her children. Kalayla needs love and company, while Lena needs a second chance to correct her past mistakes. The author brings these three characters together in this heartwarming novel.

The first positive aspect of this book is the voices of the characters. These voices carry the element of originality. I love how the characters speak in an authentically human way. This fact makes the dialogue in the book interesting. The second positive aspect of this book is the way the author does a very good job of bringing characters of different ages together in this beautifully written book. Given the fact that the characters in this book are of different ages, I believe this book can be enjoyed by many people.
The third positive aspect of this book is the issues the book deals with. The issues are issues relevant today. It describes the problem of racism in our world. It shows how dire the effects of racism can be. It highlights the danger of arranged marriage. Also, it shows how there is no perfect parenting. The fourth positive aspect of this book is the character of Lena. I love the fact that she is resilient. She takes her mother's advice seriously. She makes herself indispensable in the family business. I love how she becomes so strong that she can fight for younger female members of the family. By looking beyond herself, she recognizes and meets the needs of those around her. Her determination to help others and the help she renders eventually change her perception of her children. It turns out that she has overestimated the influence of her deceased husband over her children. Her effort to reconcile Maureen with her family brings about her reconciliation with her children.

This book does not have a negative aspect.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars as a result of its happy ending. I did not notice any errors while reading this book. It was exceptionally well edited.

I recommend this book to readers who like novels with strong female characters and happy endings.
