Review of Kalayla
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is about a little girl who is new to the neighborhood. She is quite independent and doesn’t need the help of other people. She doesn’t have friends and she really enjoys her time with herself. Until, she meets an old lady who will constantly bug her and offer her things that a normal girl wants to try. Kalayla is very firm with her decisions in life, but this old lady is someone she never thought she needed. Their friendship will grow and they will find comfort with one another. As they share their issues and struggles in life, more people in their town will also become a part of their lives.
What I like about the book is the people who surround Kalayla. I loved how they were able to help her with her issues in life and also guide her to become a better version of herself. Moreover, I like that even though she is hard-headed, they always find joy when helping her and they also realize that Kalayla is an eye-opener to them. The little girl helps the characters to become more open to the world and also not be afraid in addressing their issues in life. Lastly, I loved that the old lady became a great influence in Kalayla’s life and vice versa.
What I don’t like about the book is the way Kalayla talks to other people. Sometimes she becomes so disrespectful and doesn’t analyze the words she spits out. But, knowing that she is just a little girl and she doesn’t know any better; it is also great that there are people who are willing to guide her and let her realize that some things are better not to be spoken.
I will rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because it is exceptionally edited and I don’t notice a mistake. Also, I really commend the author’s writing; it is very easy to understand and straightforward. I really like the whole cast and how they influence the whole story. And lastly, I really like how Kalayla becomes better as the story goes on.
I will recommend this book to young adults, it is very light and they can definitely enjoy reading this. Also, some of them might relate to the story of Kalayla. It might give them hope that the people around them are always willing to give a hand; you just need to take the initiative to ask for it.
