Review of Kalayla
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is about a little girl who has a very strong personality. After her father's death, she and her mother moved into a new neighborhood where she doesn't know anyone. She will meet an old lady that has the same personality as hers. Kalayla never thought that Lena would be someone who could understand her and would care for her. She will become her friend and grandmother as well. They will share each others stories and struggles in life. As the days go on, their connection will be something that can help to heal their unstitched wounds.
What I like about the book is the whole personality of Kalayla; she might be hard-headed sometimes but her love for others is very soothing. She always cares even though her mouth says otherwise. Also, I like that she is very independent and always figured out things that confuse her. In addition, I admire the fact that she is never scared to seek help from others, especially when she wants to give back to her loved ones. Moreover, I love how she always protects her mother at any cost. Besides Kalayla, I really like Lena because of how she cares for other people. Even though she doesn't know who Kalayla is, she is always willing to help and love her. That is why, I really like the relationship that they build as the story goes on.
What I don't like about the book is the way Maureen grieves the death of her husband; she sometimes forgets that she has a daughter that needs her attention and care. Also, I don't like that she lied to Kalayla about her family. But other than that, this story is something you can relate to, especially when it tackles family.
I will rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because I really like the connection between Kalayla and Lena. They really cared and loved each other even though they always fought. The book is also professionally edited and I don't notice a mistake. Also, the story will teach you things about family and friends.
I will recommend this book to young adults. I feel like this is the book that they can relate to since it talks about family and the struggles that come with it. They can also learn from the good personality of the characters, especially Kalayla. And lastly, they will acquire the greatest lesson, which is forgiveness.
