Review of Three loves and other stories
Love is a beautiful thing to be experienced by all. It is beautiful, yet complicated at times. Love can create a major impact on our lives. It may be positive or negative depending upon one’s action.
Three loves and other stories by Lata Gullapalli is a book compilation of anthologies. This book comprises 8 different short stories. The first line of the first story, ‘Three loves’ was interesting. It was about a girl, Sia. She was a young girl, born in a family where her life decisions were not respected enough. Growing up, she had so many questions that were left unheard and unanswered.
This book talks about love, confidence, self-searching, respect, and parenting. Every story had its unique touch and I found it relatable to the stories of the Indian subcontinent. There were tales that expressed the truth and the hidden scenarios of the common Indian families. It explained the underlying struggles faced by ordinary people upon society’s oppression. Each and every story represents varying scenarios of man, trying to face and overcome the struggles put by the society. The book also emphasizes on the major society issues like gender inequality, and patriarchy.
The author begins every story with a poem, written in Hindi language. It is also translated into English. I found the poems fascinating and it conveyed the messages beautifully. The writing style was elegant. The inclusion of metaphor was appropriate and I found it captivating. It wasn’t difficult to understand.
I particularly liked how the book narrated the stories based on the cultural aspects. These stories are based on Indian folktales, and can be related to people across the world. Some of my favorite stories among them are ‘The Yen of Happiness’, and ‘Restart’. The stories make us feel different waves of emotions and many are relatable. My biggest take-away from this book is that everyone deserves love and it is okay if we sometimes stop in our tracks and take a break.
I expected the stories had more dialogues because they make the stories livelier. The book was not well-edited. There were few errors and punctuation mistakes. And few stories seemed to be a bit lengthier. Apart from that, this book is a delightful read.
On the whole, I enjoyed reading this book. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The book is written in a simple language.
I recommend it to readers who like reading short-stories. This book helps us to understand varying aspects of life.
