Strong Heart, by Charlie Sheldon, is the first book of the "Strong Heart Series." The book is packed with adventure. Tom together with his friend, William, and William's daughter, Myra, prepare for a hiking trip to visit the grave of Bob-Bob; Tom's grandpa. The plan was interrupted when Tom's ex-wife, Ruth, shows up unannounced on his doorstep in the middle of the rain and drops off a 13-year-old girl named Sarah with them. It was the night when Tom discovered that he was a grandfather. Sarah has a strong, stubborn attitude that cannot be changed which led Tom to the questioning whether they should call off the journey to his grandfather's grave. William and Myra convinced Tom to bring Sarah along for the hike so that she may get the chance to meet her great grandfather too. Tom reluctantly agreed; convincing himself that this will be the perfect opportunity for Sarah to learn a few life lessons. Sarah was not too fond of the idea and was constantly letting Tom know that this was like an act of kidnapping, because she didn't have any part of the decision to take her along!

The adventure began and every night at the camp fire they each learnt something new about each other. Tom's underlying motive was also revealed around the camp fire one night. He had set out to return an ancient native American artifact that he had supposedly borrowed when he was younger and planned to return it. Taking a break from the hike Sarah wonders into the meadows alone, coming back with a drawing of an odd-looking bear that she claimed she had seen. When Myra saw her drawing, she was surprised that Sarah claimed to have seen this bear, because Myra identified it as a short-faced bear which has been extinct for centuries. Very soon the adventurer's realized that it wasn't them taking Sarah on this adventure, but the other way around. Sarah mysteriously disappeared for eight days which left the rest of them searching for her frantically! When she showed up unexpectedly, she claims that she had been gone for a month at sea, the mystery continues.

I truly enjoyed and felt engrossed reading the story of Strong Heart. The fact that it was packed with adventure and mystery kept me wanting to read more as the pages came alive. Another interesting thing about the book is the history of the land and animals during the ice ages. The characters and their personalities were well fitted, especially as they grew throughout the book, for example, Sarah, who started off with a bad attitude, but ended up having the greatest adventure.

I personally didn't like the blasphemous undertones used in the book and also felt like some parts of the book were drawn out too long. there weren't any blatant errors found in the book which could mean that it was professionally edited.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults, especially if you're into adventure fictions, magical realism and coming-of-age story. I would advise you not to skip this book, there's more to it than what you think.
