Review of The Reel Sisters
Five women with different backgrounds and life stories came together for a trip in which fishing is the excuse to gather and share their thoughts and self-discoveries. Four of them had known before, but the fifth one appeared in the shape of a naked woman dragged by the current. I know, this may seem odd and I am not saying that it is not a little bit at the very least, but the appearance of this fifth character triggered a new set of interactions among the characters that I found both, interesting and endearing.
The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings felt pretty much like “The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” or a book of this sort. But something I really like was that it lacks the naivety of those. Here, the portrait of womanhood and its many challenges throughout life is portrayed in a raw and realistic way. I found myself rooting for these women, sympathizing with their tragedies, smiling at their victories, and connecting with each story. The author excelled in making you feel inside the novel. Sometimes I felt aboard that ship. And other times I could almost taste the tea while I was listening to one of them. Her vivid descriptions were just something else. Moreover, the book is exceptionally well-edited which is always appreciated.
There aren´t many aspects I didn´t like about this book, but I am afraid to say that the one I disliked the most is a core one. The multinarrative did not work for me. It was beautifully done and it was quite easy to know who the narrator was in each part of the story, but I found it distracting. Sometimes it even seemed like a lazy writing resource, as many parts were repetitive. I might be biased on this, as I personally don´t like this kind of narrative so I knew from the start, I wasn´t going to enjoy this multi-person thing.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because it is an entertaining novel that takes you on a voyage of struggles, self-discovery, and friendship. I´ve never been the girly type, group of girlfriends kind of woman. I am more of a loner. But I fell for these women and their bond. Somehow, I found them relatable and that is why I absolutely loved this story.
I would recommend this book to women of all ages but especially to those who are middle-aged as I guess they´d have a better understanding of many of the situations described. If you are fond of fly-fishing this is definitely the book for you as the author is a fly-fishing enthusiast and her explanations of this are detailed and accurate.
