Review of Visiting With An Angel
Visiting With An Angel by Jerry A. Greenberg
The story focuses on Jerry who is an elderly widower who leads a very lonely life with his cat who is his sole companion. Jerry is desperate for connection as he reminisces about his past and his deceased family. In his attempt to search for connection he decides to visit his deceased relatives in his hometown cemetery. Jerry's current life is plagued by a stark lack of connection and identity. He feels as though he has lost his community and as if the universe is looking to answer his silent prayers something strange happens at the cemetery and he manages to observe the bittersweet reality of his past and the current status of his life.
On his way home he encounters a thunderstorm which he and is soon visited by an angel that night. The angel talks to him and answers his questions and offers him a proposal that can change his life. Human connection is essential and this book does a good job of highlighting that. Jerry becomes depressed and lonely because of the lack of human connection. He has outlived most of his generation and he faces the lonely fate that most elderly people in the world today face. The book walks the reader through Jerry's journey as he is faced with the fast-changing world where the elderly are largely forgotten. The book has a very captivating story and I did not find any negative things about it. I also like the book cover. It is very well made and on theme with the story.
This was a very emotional read. There are several heavy themes in the book such as loneliness which comes with growing old. The feeling of loneliness is often intensified by the elderly feeling as if they have outlived their usefulness and no longer fit in with the new world. The book also touches on several religious topics in both Christianity and Judaism. Although Jerry is not particularly religious his family still follows their Jewish traditions.
As a reader, I got to go through Jerry's journey with him cheering him on and feeling his complicated emotions along with him. Another interesting theme that the book touches on is philosophy and the differences between Christianity and Judaism. Death is also another theme in the book. The story does not shy away from showcasing the reality of the lives of elderly people in society which includes having people one has known for many years pass away. There is also an aspect of the supernatural where Jerry survives a supernatural storm and is later visited by an angel.
I rate it four out of four stars as this book is well-written and I enjoyed reading it. It also seems to be professionally edited and has several thought-provoking questions. It is good for readers of any age who like to read books with supernatural and philosophical aspects. It is an important book that gives insight into the lives of the older generation and can help readers understand the complicated feelings that come with aging, death, and loneliness.
