Review of The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid
The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid by Gary Robinson is an interesting story. This book exposes the ordeal children from dysfunctional homes go through in life and how to bring healing to these troubled souls.
This story is about a famous sword swallower, Duke Reynolds, and Gary Robinson from Chico, California. The two men had a similar path in life. They both came from troubled homes, and the same vices ravaging their homes almost destroyed their lives. Duke left home at a very young age because alcoholism had stolen the peace of his home; likewise, Gary also left home because he couldn't put up with his mother's drinking habit anymore.
Duke embraced the circus after he left home. He started with pony rides before meeting a sword-swallowing legend from Argentina, Carlos Leal, who taught him how to swallow swords. Duke loved the circus because he experienced the love that he couldn't get from his family. He worked with the circus for a long time and made a name for himself in the sword-swallowing art. He met Gary, a man going through a tough season in his life with no direction, and a beautiful friendship blossomed, as Duke has a soft spot for the vulnerable. Would Duke help Gary to find out his purpose in life? Read this interesting story to find out.
I loved that the book exposed the unhealthy working practices in the traveling circus. The circus workers work for eighteen to twenty-two hours daily, and the company gives them methamphetamine to evade exhaustion and prevent any mishap from taking place. I also love the financial independence that the circus gives the social misfit and the lovely relationship between them. In addition, I learned of the destructive effects of alcohol and drug abuse that plagued Duke and Gary's lives and led to many wrong decisions that affected their lives gravely. I admire their resilience despite their obstacles; they were courageous and hardworking individuals.
Furthermore, I appreciate that this book exposed the plights of the children from troubled homes. They go through a lot of mental and physical stress as they leave home early and are often lured into making decisions that will mar their lives. More so, I love the friendship between Duke and Gary. Duke encouraged Gary to find his path in life. He told him to live life to the fullest and fulfill his dream.
I admire the descriptive style of writing as it brings alive the author's imagination to the reader. It makes the book simple, and everyone can understand it. It recommends a website with interesting literary works that might interest the reader.
There is nothing I dislike about the book. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is professionally edited, as I observed a few errors. I recommend this book to parents, doctors, nurses, security personnel, drug addicts, alcoholics, and anyone who loves reading an interesting story.
