In Pandemic, Dieter Gartelmann relays the events of COVID-19 and the potential responses to the pandemic by the US government through the fictional lives of Argus E., Dorothy Thompson and Daryll Braithwaite. In the preface, Gartelmann acknowledges his interest in the US and how it handled the outbreak of COVID-19. Through Argus, he highlights his hopes and the frustrations he experienced regarding America's failure to overcome the pandemic.

Argus is a scientist and a health advisor on COVID-19 to the Andaman Islands of the Republic of India. He uses an Artificial Intelligence package to monitor US policy responses to the pandemic and the reactions of the Americans to such policies. It is by focusing on reporters, Dorothy and Daryll, that he is able to observe individual reactions. Throughout the book, Gartelmann highlights the political division in America and how it contributed to America's failure to effectively handle COVID-19 infections and its citizen's failure to adhere to restrictions imposed. This division is portrayed by Dorothy, a Democrat reporter, and her friends and family and Daryll and his Republican friends.

Pandemic is a good read and very informative and well edited but it also has too much information which takes away from its good plot. This also makes it tedious to read. Firstly, in the first chapter, Gartelmann introduces supporting characters, in detail, as a way to explain each character's relationship to our main characters, Dorothy and Daryll. However, he repeats himself as the characters are introduced further into the book. It would have been a more interesting reveal of the Walters and the Orthellos further along as opposed to at the beginning. Secondly, Dorothy and the President discuss press releases before they are published and we get to read those press releases and at times, a correction of some press releases. It felt repetitive to read the long press releases although they were thoroughly discussed prior. The book would have less words to read and more engaging.

I rate Pandemic 2 out of 4 stars for good effort and more so since its Gartelmann's second book. The storyline is interesting but I would recommend some characters be dropped as they do not significantly contribute to the story or have similar experiences as other characters. For instance, the Walters and Orthellos have mirrored experiences.

I recommend the book to history and cospiracy lovers. Gartelmann includes dates as a way for a countdown to the January 6th and people's reactions in the days following after. It is a good read for everyone and does not include vulgarity or explicit content.
