Visiting with An Angel by Jerry A. Greenberg is a captivating and uplifting story following the main character, Jerry, and his cat, Ray. It’s a fictional book highlighting the identity of a person. It centers primarily on the ancestral effects in our lives and our purpose as we grow. The story focuses on the past and present accounts of Jerry's life, in his journey of reconnecting with his ancestors and himself.

Following the nostalgic reminisces of his deceased relatives and his Jewish ancestry, Jerry promptly plans a visit to his hometown cemetery. This sets off a chain of events in his life as he questions what his life will amount to with the death of his past community, and the loneliness that looms in his life. The visit brings to life the memories of his past and reminds him of a lost connection with his family’s ancestral beliefs, and the way of life the family always adhered to. Flashbacks of his life and the fear of being alone resonate with him. He is caught in a horrendous rainstorm driving back home and doesn't remember arriving. When asleep, an angel visits him with the challenge of reconnecting him to his lost community and educating him on his ancestors. Afterward, he becomes friends with a lady, Evelyn, who introduces him to a whole new community, in his journey to self-discovery. Who is the angel that visits him? Who is Evelyn? Does Jerry reconnect with himself and know his own identity?

One major aspect of the book that I liked was the author’s skill in conveying the story to his audience. It was very easy to read and understand and drops an unexpected turn of events toward the end, building up on the thrill in the book. The book touches on the identity crisis people go through in life due to various circumstances, but eventually brings out the beauty and joy of understanding one's own identity. Remarkably, the book did not contain any vulgar words, hence was rather soothing.

I will rate Visiting with An Angel by Jerry A. Greenberg a 4 out of 4 stars due to its exemplary narration and chronological turn of events.

I recommend this book to anyone who has gone through or is currently going through struggles in their self-discovery journey. The author displays the pain and struggles faced as one reconnects with their identity and the spiritual, physical, and emotional help one may get along the way.
