Review of Man Mission
[Following is a volunteer review of "Man Mission" by Eytan Uliel.]
Eytan Uliel's Man Mission is a beautiful and moving tale of the bond between 4 college friends. The friends, Sam, Daniel, Alec, and the narrator, embark on an annual adventurous trip, dubbed the Man Mission. The Man Mission is a trip taken by these friends to a predetermined location ranging from Taiwan to Iceland, and often lasting about a week. This trip serves as a getaway from the pressures of daily life and through it, they discover more about themselves and each other. Through these trips, we are taken through a rollercoaster of emotions as time and life take a toll on each friend, but at the end of the day, each one of them has a trip and friends to count on.
One thing that stands out right from the start, is the quality of the description present. The locations visited are vividly described, creating a setting that can be easily visualized by the reader. Furthermore, the portrayal of the emotions felt by the narrator is very powerful. Uliel displays mastery here by giving a candid description of these feelings. This makes it easy to sympathize with him as the description of the feelings causes one to relate to them.
I particularly enjoyed how the narration of the story was undertaken with respect to the Man Mission trips. The Man Mission trips serve as checkpoints in the lives of these friends where we learn of their lives since the preceding trip. Through this, we can get a trajectory of their lives and can accurately relate how someone felt to the events that occurred at a certain point in time. Ultimately, we receive a visualization of the progress made by each of the four friends, and at the end of the day, this makes for a wholesome reading experience.
I enjoyed the book thoroughly and as such, did not find any qualms while reading.
I would give Man Mission a rating of 4 out of 4. The book features some of the finest descriptions while creating a beautiful, emotional, and ultimately very fulfilling story about friendship through the years. Moreover, this is a perfect book to read in one sitting given the flow of the story and how the book is divided into individual trips. The book is also exceptionally edited, as highlighted by the absence of errors.
The book features some strong language and content that is sexual in nature and as such, it is suitable for mature audiences. This is a very beautiful story that, I feel, would be enjoyed by any reader. It is the ideal book to read in a single sitting.
