Kalayla is a wonderfully written novel by Jeannie Nicholas. Throughout the book, we follow Kalayla, an unmannered, brave, and outgoing young girl, Lena an elder woman, who has gone through a whole lot, and finally Maureen the mother of Kalayla. Maureen was unfortunately vanished by her family, due to her marrying a dark-skinned man named Jamal. This led her to raise Kalayla all by herself, on top of her struggling with finding a job and learning to live on her own, etc. When Lena one day notices Kalayla and her outrageous personality, memories of her past start to pop up, and slowly Lena's life turns upside down… but what is making Lena feel so connected to Kalayla, and will Kalayla ever know why she has never seen anyone from her mom's side of the family?

While reading this book, I felt incredibly connected to each one of the characters. We read the book in chapters switching between each character so we see what's going on from their point of view. This makes it way more interesting to read, and this is definitely one of the things I enjoyed most about the book. We get introduced to various topics and problems, that unfortunately occur in society as well as issues that many people struggle with. The novel talks about racism, domestic violence, emotional abuse, neglect, death, and discrimination. The author portrayed these topics amazingly, and I could always relate to what was happening. It gave me an inside on different perspectives people might have on these topics, and why their opinions are the way they are. This without any doubt positively changed my mind on several things, and the author did an amazing job talking about these serious topics.

However, the ending wasn’t exactly how I expected it to be. I was slowly preparing myself for an ending, but it was like there never really was one. There were various open and lose ends, which made me a bit frustrated. With that said, then I am still as big of a fan of this novel as I was before.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is exceptionally well-edited, and I could not find any major writing or grammatical errors. The story is inspiring, captivating, realistic and I could keep going. Even though I did state a negative thought, then it doesn’t affect the overall scoring at all, and the book still recieves a full score from me.

If you are looking for a book with character development and family content, then this is definitely a great pick. However, it does contain many hard topics, as well as a great amount of profanity, so if you are sensitive to that, then I recommend choosing another book.
