Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a delightful and at times moving book about vulnerability and brotherhood. It tells the story of four friends who create a tradition: every single year they organize what they call a “Man Mission”, and they travel to an exotic and untamed location off the beaten path and push themselves out of their comfort zone, taking the opportunity to try new things and challenge each other’s courage and stamina. It seems just a boys’ game on the outside, but it turns out to be way more than that. It is a special reunion to which they look forward the whole year. It is a temporary escape route from their lives, where they are expected to be strong all the time, to sacrifice themselves and their needs for the sake of their loved ones, and where crying is not allowed. During these annual journeys, they can finally be themselves, and by acting like children they can eventually learn what it really means to be a man, beyond stereotypes. And when they come back, they reflect on the lessons learned, and they become better people one mission at a time. There is a deep connection between the emotional challenges they face in everyday life, and the physical challenges they seek, trip after trip. The need to feel in control for once is indeed very present throughout the story.

It is a great story about friendship and changes in life, and how everyone makes mistakes; what’s really important is learning from them. Following the misadventures of the characters, we learn that being a “real man” does not mean being strong, fearless, and daring. It means overcoming gender roles and showing one's fragilities. That is courage. I appreciate the author’s sense of humor and style, very straight to the point.

I found very few errors, however, I do not feel like giving this book a 4 out of 4 because I did not appreciate the fact that the narrative skips back and forth all of a sudden, I found it slightly confusing. Plus, as you proceed with the reading, the adventures become less and less creative. I do not mean boring, not at all. But as far as I am concerned, the very first ones were hilarious, far more enjoyable than the last ones.

Therefore, I will give this book a 3 out of 4 without hesitation, since in general, I recommend it.

Considering the frequency of profane and foul language, this book is definitely not intended for children. Having said that, I think the best audience for it might be adults who enjoy adventure travel filled with episodes of soul searching.
