Review of We Drank Wine
We Drank Wine by Marion Reidel is a humorous book about four friends: Celeste, Sandra, Beth, and Janice, and their close relations. They have been friends for most of their lives. The first three have been friends since university, and Janice is Celeste's neighbor. They support each other and solve problems in interesting ways. They face everyday issues such as parenting, relationships, finding themselves, and insecurities. While their solutions may not be what we expect, nature responds to those solutions in unique ways.
We Drank Wine is a collection of twenty-three short stories. Each story is independent of the others, but they are all interconnected in one way or the other. I enjoyed this novel immensely, as I like its presentation. The storytelling uses different points of view. I especially enjoyed those in the first-person point of view. The book has a relaxed pace where nothing feels rushed. Marion’s storytelling is also good. She has used funny analogies, irony, amusing descriptions, and plot twists to keep the reader engaged.
Marion has written this book using simple, easy-to-understand English. As a result, readers with any level of understanding of the English language will appreciate We Drank Wine. The descriptions of actions and places vividly and uniquely connected well with my imagination. Character development is also well-done. There are many characters in the book, but it is easy to keep track of the main ones and their immediate relations. They are also realistic.
My favorite aspect of the book is the plot twists in each story. I wrongly predicted the outcomes of some of the character's actions which made me smile even more. For instance, when an arsonist becomes a hero in an unexpected turn of events. That one surprised me the most. All in all, this is a good book. Readers who enjoy stories written from a feminine point of view will relate to the stories in this book and enjoy them.
The editorial team did a good job, as I only found four errors. There is minimal profanity in the book as well. I did not find anything displeasing about We Drank Wine. I recommend it to casual readers, lovers of humorous stories, and readers of laidback short stories. Due to the reasons I have stated above, I rate We Drank Wine 4 out of 4 stars. If you pick it up, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
