Goods and Effects is a fiction novel written by Al Schnupp. The story is about a Mennonite woman named Hannah Mercer, who lives in the Missouri countryside. Unfortunately, she finds her husband and sons dead in mysterious circumstances. The story is written post-their demise, in which Hannah explores her cause and happiness. It highlights the protagonist's plight and how she navigates her way through her life alongside her platonic friendships.

The story advances with Hannah selling her family home, farms, cattle and livestock. Found in the garage, she sets up the self-customized van that she uses as a store to sell daily-use items. This vehicle is used to travel several circuits around the countryside, which eventually became famous. How this vehicle, which was more than a locomotive home to Hannah, becomes the heart of her life would be a great read to go for.

Hannah Mercer is a strong-minded personality with intelligent wits. One can’t overlook the friendly and supportive nature she possesses. She is a team worker and knows how to execute plans with a flexible approach toward problem-solving with limited resources. There are other characters who have their own stories to portray. Like Darla, Velma, Wanda, and other characters whom Hannah encounters add positive value to the evolution of the story. She makes lifetime friends out of customers and even remained friendly with her ex neighbors.

The most exciting aspect was how a male author has brought out a different perspective of female lives, for which he should be well appreciated. The book includes a diverse representation (special child, Blacks, non-binary genders, etc.) in terms of characters involved. The liberal thinking of the supportive cast is something unexpected considering the time the story is set in. The story line sheds light on the strong bonds between Hannah and her friends, who are always ready to help each other.

One thing that one would not ignore is the pace of the story. It seems to be slow and takes its sweet time in generating interest in the readers. Also, Hannah appears to be a super idealistic and an advocate for justice, who makes friends wherever she goes. The story is very uniform, with no gripping plot twists. It is a mixed bag in its entirety. Most of the story is only about Hannah’s routine trips and her customers-turned-life-time friends, which becomes tiresome to read at one point. Considering all these reasons, I would like to give 2 out of 4 stars to this novel.

The novel is professionally edited without any profanity used by any of the characters. The book can be well recommended to teenagers and adults, or to people who like to peek into the lives of ordinary people living in the countryside, and how their relationships may deepen overtime.
