Review of Man Mission
Man mission by Eytan Uliel is a gripping story of brotherhood; expeditions; resilience in the face of adversity; and masculine struggles. It follows four young men as they set out to find their places in the world, their individual successes and failures, and the course of their relationships. Spanning Fifteen years of their lives, from when they were fresh-faced, virile law students to drooping-bellied grown men — except Alec, the one friend that managed to remain fit— struggling with midlife crisis.
What started out as a mild suggestion between two friends while stuffing their faces with food at a college party, became an integral part of their lives. Over the years they inducted their two other friends, traversing across all continents — from sailing the beautiful seas of Asia to spotting African wildlife in their natural habitat—. These yearly voyages came to be more than a manly need, but an emotional outlet, where they let their inner kids out to play. Through activities that sometimes bordered on insanity, they attained some form of sanity.
It's a read that ensures a fun journey while also instilling some precious life nuggets. The story evokes one's emotions as it paints the harsh realities of becoming an adult and the responsibilities that inadvertently come with it. And the consequence that comes with making poor life choices.
Man mission is that book you do not wish to put down, or for the story to end. No matter how hard one looks, you just can not find anything wrong with it. From start to the end, it was well written and edited to taste. I really liked how each character's story and personality were well developed. My favorite of the four has got to be Sam, with his wicked sense of humor. I admired the special bond among the friends and how they were always there for each other, even in situations that were downright awkward.
The details of each trip were quite vivid, and the map illustrations at the beginning of all the man missions offer the reader a visual teaser of what's to come. It makes one want to jump on a flight to one exotic location for a taste of that excitement. The book is divided into three parts; and each part is comprised of five chapters, rounding off with a brief epilogue to 362 pages. Each chapter was opened with an inspirational quote coupled with a verse from The Bible. This did not alter the book's tone to that of a religious one however, as it only served as a cursory introduction to the context.
I am rating this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars. If I could rate it a 5, I would. Eytan is such an amazing writer and deserves every accolade this book garners. The editing team did a fantastic job as well, ensuring the book's error-free quality. It's one of those books you pick up at the airport for a long hour's journey, and you don't even realize it when you arrive at your destination. I honestly can not wait for it to come on the big screen.
It is a life and travel guide rolled into one terrific book. Readers from all walks of life, no matter their personal preference in books will surely not regret adding Man mission to their library/to-read-list. Just as adventure geeks will thoroughly enjoy it.
