The Arrow That Flies By Day by John Servant is a short story that follows the life of John Thaddeus, a marine who is determined to become an NFL kicker. With the help of his old school principal, Sister Francis, and his faith in God he embarks on a journey to achieve his dream.

The book begins with John Thaddeus arriving unexpected at the New Jersey Raptors’ practice field. He is inexperienced and out of place but eager to get himself noticed so he can try out for the team. His warm personality has you rooting for him from the first page and his determination and faith is heartening.

Along the way he will face many obstacles that are set to test his faith. He is met with people that see him as an outsider and also a great amount of prejudice regarding his continued commitment to his religion. Sister Francis acts as his guide to remind him of God’s message and keep him on the right path.

This was not the sort of book I would usually choose to read, being neither religious or into sports. However, I really enjoyed this inspiring and thought-provoking story. I enjoyed learning the backstory on John Thaddeus and I felt really invested in him and his development. There is quite an unexpected ending and I felt every emotion during the course of the read.
My favourite character was Sister Francis, she is an inspirational figure and her care for everyone she meets is a true lesson in humanity.

Some parts of the book felt a bit disjointed to me and almost rushed in parts. I don’t feel like this spoiled the overall flow of the book though, and I still really enjoyed it.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars and would like to re-read it. I wrote down so many quotes that resonated with me whilst reading this and it has definitely had an impact on my life perspective. The only reason for not giving it 4 stars was due to the parts that I felt were rushed, mainly in the middle of the book. The book was professionally edited and I only noticed one potential typo.

Readers that want to deepen their religious faith would enjoy this book as well as people that are looking to learn about a different mindset. I can also see this being a great motivational tool for people who are looking to find purpose and focus in their life.
