Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a book written with a young black girl at the point of interest. It featured friendship, betrayal, and domestic violence.

Kalayla is an eleven year old, born of the union of a white mother and a black father, she never knew who her mother's parents were and she never asked. When her father died, it wrecked Maureen (her mother) and picking up the pieces left Kalayla to look after herself. Then an old widow (Lena), who is also their landlady, noticed Kalayla always being on her own. So she decided to approach her and the two soon become friends. It didn't take long before Lena, who lost her twins shortly after losing her husband, became the grandmother she always wanted (although she has two other kids and grandkids, but one is estranged and the other, she has no idea where or if he is alive) to be and Kalayla got the grandmother she always wanted. Just when everything seems perfect, it all came crashing down with one single lie.

From the first page to the last, I find Kalayla to be a heart touching story. A real page turner featuring how the love of family could be so dynamic yet so enduring. Jeannie Nicholas did a great job pouring her ideas out in a very lucrative and motivating way. Her characters were well introduced and established, her scenarios were nothing short of realistic. I really had a hard time trying to think of this book as a fiction... It is more like a true story. I have to say, it is a story well written.

There is hardly a negative thing to say about this book. Not an error was found during my reading, although a couple typos are present, but none are big enough to make a dent. So I am just going to rate the book a four out of four stars rating, it is only fair.

It does speak of nudity, but it never described sexuality nor erotism. It contains a mild case of profanity. It does contain domestic violence as well as disrespect coming from an underage to an adult. The use of the name 'Jesus' was too frequent and used mostly in vain, this could be kind of offensive to religious readers. If the above things don't bother you as a reader, then I recommend Kalayla for you would find no issue enjoying it.
