Being alone is one of the worst feelings a person could ever experience. This means that everyone you have ever had a connection with is, either far away or long gone and that you can never seek them out again for their company. Being alone also means that you can hardly identify with current events and situations. You may be in a room full of people, but you feel dejected and entirely alone.

Most of us would never want the kind of life that Jerry leads. With a cat for company, life for Jerry, a widower for 25 years, is downright depressing. His old age and loneliness cause him to delve into his and his ancestors’ past, to reconnect with a life that seems lost and long gone. In addition to this, he feels that his ancestors have influenced his way of life due to experiences and prejudices. Invested in his mission to investigate, he visits a community cemetery in his hometown, and on his way back, he drives home in the middle of a supernatural thunderstorm. Fortunately for him, he survives it. Soon after, he gets visited by an angel who wants to exchange his pariah lifestyle for a more fulfilled social life with so much more to look forward to.

The character Jerry is a representation of the majority of the elderly in our society, who have outlived their generations, and feel out of place with the new ones. The book has been written in the first-person point of view, which gives the reader full access to the main character’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The language in the book is easy and clear to understand. Jerry A Greenberg also incorporates historical, geographical, and religious aspects to visiting With An Angel to give it a humane and original feel. The emotions and situations are adequately described such that the reader becomes more and more invested in the book.

This book has no negative aspects. The author has addressed some thought-provoking issues such as religious prejudices, selflessness, and individuality. These issues have dogged the society for a long time and one of them, religious prejudice, has reshaped the world in huge and horrifying ways. The main character has been beautifully supported by the minor roles surrounding him, imposing the need to have a meaningful community in the story. The book appears to be exceptionally well-edited, as I came across no errors. I am happy to award this book four out of four stars for the above reasons.

This book is suitable for an audience of all ages due to its empowering message of unity. It is also suitable for fans who are into paranormal stories. This book is a highly educative read, good for an afternoon or an evening read.
