Review of Fill The Gaps
Fill in the gaps by Andrew Johnston is a novel that centers on Isaac, a 24-year-old man, who has lived the most of his entire life in his hometown, Edinburgh. Isaac just broke up with his girlfriend and is bent on not saying a word about it to his friends, refusing to answer all their questions about the incident. His parents are out of the country, so, he lives in a flat with Will and Lyle, his flatmates. Will and Lyle are closer to each other than to Isaac because they have been flatmates even before Isaac joined them. Isaac's personality is of someone so critical and judgemental. He tramples on other people's feelings to feed his ego. He criticizes people to feel better about himself. He lied to his friends about his job at a corporate IT security, making them believe he is much better than they are. Will is an artist, who has a lot of things to deal with concerning his job and is trying to get his life back on the right track, and Lyle, having traveled many times, now works at a restaurant where he has to meet the high demands of his job and even sleep with his male boss. As the story goes on, Isaac was having a hard time getting a real and new job to cover up for his lie, since he has not been able to pay his rent. While he was struggling to get a better life, he comes across Cullen, his old-time friend, who just got back after vanishing for years. Cullen, knowing fully well the kind of person Isaac is, introduced him to theft, which he could not turn down because of his greed for money. They went on a series of escapades, stealing money and other valuables. Did he get caught? Or is he able to get the kind of life he desires? Read and find out.
I love the fact that the story is easy to comprehend and there are not too many plot twists. I also like how the story isn't just solely dependent on the main character alone, other characters are detailed too. My favorite characters are Will and Diane. They are both having a hard time as well, but they don't let it define them and they are not taking it out on others.
While this is a good book, I do not like the fact that the concluding part is not detailed. The author did not state what became the fate of the main character, whether good or bad, if his life changed for the better or the other way round.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. There are quite a lot of errors in the book, which I believe the author should have corrected. I also think the author should have done better with the concluding part, it wasn't detailed enough.
I recommend this book to adults who wish to explore and know more about life. This book is unsuitable for people who are sensitive to curse words.
