Review of And Throw Away The Skins
And Throw Away the Skins by Scott Archer Jones is a heart heavy story about a woman, Bec Robertson, who newly moved from Dallas to a small town in New Mexico to an old family cabin. While navigating a new secluded lifestyle, Bec is not backing down to finding what her soul needs at a time of shedding her old life and learning how to become who she needs to be in her new life. While meeting new friends and neighbors in New Mexico, she is talked into donating some of her land for a Veterans Center which leads to new and interesting people in her small town and right next door as the construction crew tries to get the center up by winter. While trying to find her own identity and new life, Bec is also trying to balance what is left of her relationship with her chaplain husband who is deployed in Afghanistan and was unaware of the new life being created by his wife.
I enjoyed this book as it was relatable to what many families are going through in this modern time of military deployments, mental health issues, physical health issues, a sense of individualism and the list goes on. The author's creative description helps to create a vivid picture of the story of Bec Robertson and her search for many things as the story isn’t focused on one main problem but rather on several large issues that she must balance as she cannot run away from any of them. The author was able to capture the emotions of the many issues going on in Bec’s life yet not write in anything that is over capable of really happening in today’s modern life. Will all the different issues going on in the story, the book was hard to put down as it was ever-evolving and introducing new issues into Bec's life.
While I really enjoyed this book, there were a few characters that were less real than others and seemed to be part of the story only to have a few colorful characters in the book and possibly the storyline could have been told without those few characters. As part of the storyline, Bec has flashbacks to her childhood, I would have liked the storyline to have had more flashbacks of when Bec was a child as that would provide more of a backstory to contribute to the adult character of Bec as her character only provides short and small snips into what created her from her youth.
And Throw Away The Skins pulled at my heart as the main character reminds me of several women I know that are continuously trying to find balance between themselves as individuals yet also trying to balance being a partner in a relationship while going through big changes. The storyline is full of surprises daily even though Bec just wants a simple life out in a secluded cabin. I was on a full plane-while crying uncontrollably-reading the final portion of the book…beware future readers……it’s a tear-jerker! I rate this book a 3 out of 4 as it was a very good modern believable storyline. The book was very easy to read as it had very little to no spelling or grammatical errors.
I recommend this book for an adult audience only due to some possibly offensive behavior and sexual content.
