Review of Burly
Burly is a novel that tells about Australian youth. Paul Drewitt writes the book in first-person narration. It helps readers imagine every detail that the author wanted to tell. The book describes teenagers' lifestyle, their behavior in different situations, their friendship, their difference in views on life, their feelings, and more. Besides these friends' differences, they have a common interest: BMX bikes. Sammy, who is one of these teenagers, tells us how important is the role of society in human life. How they can change their opinion, interests, and lifestyle just to satisfy their peers, parents, or anyone around. But in the end, it doesn't matter what you do, you never can please everyone and they will still judge you. Sam, who is already a 75-years-old man, tells us how beautiful his life was, how energetic and full of dreams he and his friends were, despite all ups and downs, the negative things that existed at that time. Although now he is not in touch with his friends, he remembers his teenage life with a smile and happiness. He wishes to spend his last minutes of life having his last BMX ride, feeling that velocity.
The fact that by reading this book we can imagine and feel all the things that the author tells us is a positive aspect. While reading I came across the things like parents whacking their sons for not behaving well. That situation and feeling touched my heart and made me feel sorry for them․ The next positive aspect is that every character of the book is unique and it is interesting to be engrossed in their story till the ending and see if they achieved their goals or not.
As a negative aspect, I can consider the fact that the author describes the BMX bikes in every single detail. I felt a little bored while reading that part. But for bike fans, it is a positive and enjoyable thing.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 because the story is beautifully written, and the details are interesting and available to read and understand. Once you start reading the book you flow into it and want to know what happens next.
I can say that book is mainly for teenagers and their parents, those people who want to explore the youth lifestyle, their mindset, the readers who like short novels. And of course, BMX biking and racing lovers will adore this book. The detailed description of bikes will take them to heaven.
