Strong Heart is an enjoyable read. It combines historical fiction, elements of fantasy, modern environmentalism and cultural preservation. It is set partially in modern day Washington state. Fans of William Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear will be familiar with some of these themes. Tom Olsen meets Sarah, a granddaughter he never knew when she shows up on his doorstep just as he is embarking on a trip into the wilderness to visit his grandfather's grave. Tom reluctantly agrees to bring Sarah with him along with his two Native American friends William and William's daughter Myra. The trip is a catalyst for Sarah's adventure into the unknown, she disappears for several days and comes back changed forever physically and emotionally.
There's a subplot about a mining operation on what maybe historically important land because Tom had found and removed an ancient artifact years before when his grandfather died in the wilderness. Beliefs are challenged, politics and greed come into play and the end leaves some things resolved but questions remain.
Overall, this was a satisfying read. I feel that some of the story was a bit rushed and I would have liked the story to be a bit longer. I would give this book 3/4 stars because of some pacing problems and a few minor points that were a bit convenient. A good book to curl up with a cup of tea on a foggy, rainy day.
