What happens to the black sheep of the family? Do they retrace their steps and fit into the family values and virtues, or does the society’s label on them doom them to failure for the rest of their lives? Using Randy Love as the black sheep character in Randy the Irresistible , S M Goodier portrays the characteristics of a black sheep and how in the end, his social environment helps him transform for the better. The book focuses on the irresponsible behaviors of Randy Love from his youthful ages. From the first chapter, Randy is presented as a youth who has dropped out of “uni,” and lives contrary to the wish of his father and late mother. Contrary to his elder sister and brother, Randy lives a very irresponsible sexual life, takes nothing serious, but is blessed with good skills making him do well when he sets his mind to it. In the end however, a family friend Michael Goddard becomes a good advisor and together with support from Randy’s family, he changes his bad behaviors.

What I loved most about the book was the use of humor to describe the characters and the actions of Randy. When Randy works at a wedding reception, his description of the groom, bride, and the maids is very humorous. The reader can easily see the groom looking like a warthog without the tusks, or the bridesmaid who needs a backup in case the primary head fall off. That made me enjoy reading the book a lot. Additionally, I also liked the fact that the book did not have any major spelling or grammar mistakes. I came across a few punctuation marks that did not affect the flow or structure of the sentence. I believe that affirmed that the book was professionally done and edited.

What I did not like in the book was spaces used in it, especially the white space. There were several instances that I paused reading the book, planning to begin in the next chapter later, only to realize that the chapter had not ended. Some pages are left halfway written, and then the chapter continues on the next page. This was the only negative aspect that I could point out in the book, but I believe readers who appreciate the organization of a page with a lot of white space would appreciate such an organization in the book.

This book in my view deserves a 4 out of 4 rating because it was excellently done, and I would highly recommend it. I would not take away a star because of the minor punctuation or space aspects that I found negative, because it also made reading the book much fun. With few words centered within the pages, one easily flipped to the next page and erased the feeling of being stuck in one page for long, which can be discouraging. I would also recommend it because of the theme or message it sends out to the readers. It gives a message of hope to parents who feel their children have strayed, and children who feel like outcasts and alienated for the paths of life they have chosen.

I would, therefore, recommend this book to youths struggling with retracing their steps after following the wrong path. Adolescent and youth life comes with a lot of peer and societal influence that can make one drop out of school, and seek pleasures of the world without thinking of their families, parents, or their own future. It gets to a point when one needs to take charge of their life, but feels disillusioned and isolated as the black sheep. This book instills hope, and directs this audience to the right thinking and actions to employ.
